Thursday 26-10-06
This has been our first day of work at this work camp. As usual, things tend to develop little by little, not only as far as getting to know the people but also in the side of
acquiring a group dynamic towards the work to be done. Despite being this first day, we’ve done our work as well as we’ve could.
During the morning we’ve polished helmets used during past activities here in Ajigasawa, though we weren’t able to deliver them as it started to rain. It’s very kind that the organizers have thought it best not to carry those helmets to the office where we should have, though in my opinion the rain wasn’t as heavy as not to allow us do so. Anyway, I appreciate their kindness.
The afternoon work has been split into two, one going to clean an office, while my group, which included Hitomi, Philippe and Miyuko went to carry some logs and put them as we were told. Though it was explained why we were doing this, it didn’t come as too clear why to carry them from one point to the other when this two were so close to each other, but if the
work camp organizers told us to do so, and as long as this proves to be useful to them, I could consider our task as successful.
During the night, after dinner we’re spending our time relaxing a bit while playing cards and so on, just what we needed!

今日は、作業の一日目だった。例によって､ものごとというのは少しずつ発展していく。みんなのことだけでなく､作業をするうえでのグループの原動力も、次第に分かるようになっていくものだ。今日は､初日であったにもかかわらず、出来る限りの作業を行うことが出来た。
午前は､ここ鰺ケ沢で夏の間に使用されたヘルメットを磨いた。途中で雨が降り出し、磨いたヘルメットを保管先である事務所へと運ぶことは出来なかった。学校のスタッフの方が､雨の中ではヘルメットを運ばないほうがよいと言ってくれたが、雨はそれほど激しくはなかったように感じた。とは言え、スタッフの方々のやさしさをありがたく思う。
午後は､二手に分かれて作業をした。一つは､事務所を掃除するグループだった。もう一つグループである私とひとみ、フィリップ､まゆこの四人は､まきを運び､指示されたようにおくという仕事を行った。私たちがなぜこの仕事をする必要があるのかという説明は受けたけれども､一つの場所からある場所へと、しかも非常に近い場所へと運ぶ理由について、はっきりとは分からなかった。しかし、ワークキャンプの主催者側がそうするように指示し､それが彼らにとって役に立つことであるならば、私たちの仕事は果たされたということが出来るのだと思う。
夜は､夕食後にトランプなどをしながらリラックスした時間を過ごした。こんな時間が欲しかった！明日の作業をするのが楽しみだ！
Friday 27
We started the morning work keeping on carrying the wood from one side of the garden to the other while making small towers with it. Now it was made clear that we were asked to do this because otherwise the wood would get damp during winter time, so our work will help to keep it dry.
We had for lunch some sandwiches and pancakes with syrup (cool!) and kept in the afternoon with the same task as in the morning, though this time Hitomi Rika and I went with some village people and Mr. Funamizu to some fields where we learnt the way we had to cut the tree roots in the following days. Sadly, the dialect local people speak is quite difficult to understand for Japanese, not to mention foreigners, so we’ve managed to communicate as well as we could by gestures… Despite this, they’re a nice bunch of people, very smily and helpful.
Dinner consisted on a great nabe with kimuchi and soba, after which we’ve done a Speed Game Tournament among the
work camp members. Working is important, but having fun too! The tournament ended up with Mayuko as the winner, she’s too fast! Work is develops in a nice way, and even though it’s not too tiring, we end up every night completely dead. I sleep almost until the next morning not waking up a single time, which is rare for me!

午前の仕事は､まきを校庭の反対側へ運び､小さなタワーを作り続けるという作業だ。木は冬の間水分を含んでしまうため、まきを組むことで乾燥させることが出来るという理由から､私たちがこの仕事を任されたのだということを理解した。
昼食には､サンドウィッチとシロップをたっぷりかけたパンケーキ（とてもおいしい！）を食べ､午後は午前中と同じ仕事を続けた。ひとみとりかと私は､地元の人たちと船水さんと苗床に行き､今後行う“根切れ”の作業の仕方を習った。残念なことに､地元の人たちの話す方言は、日本人にとっても理解するのが難しいようで、外国人にとっては言うまでも無く､私たちはジェスチャーを交えながら何とかコミュニケーションを図った。それでも､地元の方々は、みんな笑顔いっぱいで､頼もしい人たちだった。
夕食は､うどん入りのキムチ鍋だった。その後､ワークキャンプのメンバーで、スピード大会を行った。作業も大切であるけれど､こちらも非常に面白い！トーナメントはまゆこの優勝で幕を閉じた。ゲーム中にカードを出す彼女の手の動きは、とにかく早かった！作業は順調に進んでいる。それほど大変な作業ではないが､毎晩非常に疲れて一日を終える。次の朝まで､一度も目を覚ますことなく眠っている。私にとっては､すごく珍しいことだ！
Saturday 28
Since the morning was rather rainy, we worked during the morning on some arrangements at the School, such as placing some computers at one classroom, or re-arranging the bicycles and other stuff at the gymnasium.
We had a free afternoon that we spent on a hot spring close in Shirakami town and we made a dinner for some guests we were to have: Mr. Otani and Mr. Nagai.
Mr. Otani came and was kind enough ass to give us lots of food and some drinks, though he didn’t stay for a drink as he had other compromises. Later during the night Mr. Nagai arrived and had with us a very enrichening talk about the whole area, how it is managed and other interesting facts. He’s a very passionate man who truly believes on what he does and who’s transmitted us a clear view of the whole Shirakami mountains situation and our task in it. Thanks to him, the work we’ve done so far and the one we’ll be doing from now on has gained in interest and at least I have the impression of really knowing what our efforts are for.

午前中は､小雨が降り､学校内での作業となった。コンピューターを教室に配置し､自転車やその他のものを体育館で並べなおした。
午後はフリーで､町にある温泉へ行き､帰宅後にはスペシャルゲストの大谷校長と永井さんのために夕食を作った。
大谷校長は､他に約束があると言ってすぐに帰ってしまったが、たくさん食べ物とお酒を差し入れしてくれた。その後､永井さんが到着し､この辺りの土地の歴史や、他の興味深いことを話してくれ､充実した時間を過ごすことが出来た。永井さんは、自分のしていることに信念を持っている情熱的な方で､白神山地の現状と私たちの作業について分かりやすく説明してくれた。彼のおかげで､これまでしてきた作業とこれからの作業がどのような意味を持つのか､少なくとも私たちの作業が何のために行われているのかということを真に理解することが出来たように感じた。
Ｓｕｎｄａｙ ２9
Today has been quite a tiring but interesting day: we woke up at 5 o’clock to go with Mr. Nagai to a part of the Shirakami woods near the Wolrd Heritage area. We drove and took a walk while having explained many facts about the beech woods, so the whole visit gained a new value as we really got to understand some of the mechanisms that rule this ecosystem.
A late breakfast lead to a split task during the morning: while some of us went to the “Hello Shirakami” Tourist Center to work on a translation of some of the texts that are placed in the exhibition area, others helped to make Shirakami Manjyu of pumpkin and herbs.
During the afternoon we worked on making souvenirs for the children who will be visiting the area in the following months (plastified autumn beech leaves among others), as they will not be as lucky as to enjoy the views of these orange, yellow and green woods…
Tomorrow’s our free day, and according to what Mr. Nagai explained to us, the following days will be our first real contact with the
work camp's tasks.

今日はすごく大変ではあるが､面白い一日だった。朝５時に起き､永井さんと白神山地の核心地域のすぐそばまで行った。途中まで車で行き､それから山の中を歩きながら､ブナについて多くの説明を聞いた。今日山に行ったことで､森の生態系を支配しているメカニズムを理解し、新たな価値を得ることが出来た。
学校に帰ってきてから朝食をとる。遅めの朝食だったので､午前中は二手に分かれて作業を行う。私たちは“ハロー白神”に行き､展示物につけられた説明書きを英語に訳すという作業を行った。他のメンバーは、かぼちゃやよもぎを使った白神まんじゅう作りの手伝いをした。
午後は､翌月ここへやってくる子供たちのためにお土産（ブナの葉を挟んだラミネート）を作った。これらのオレンジ､黄色､緑の木々を楽しむことが出来ない子供たちに、少しでも味わってもらおうということだ。
明日は､フリーデイだ。永井さんの話によれば、あさってがこのワークキャンプの任務の始まりとなる。
Monday 30
Today’s been our free day. Needless to say, we’ve been looking forward to it!
We spent the day on a bicycle ride up to the Kurokuma Waterfall, at 9 Km from our residence. The day was specially clear and sunny, so we enjoyed astonishing views during all the trip. After the ride we walked for some minutes until we arrived at the waterfall itself, and decided to have our lunch close at the riverside, nap included.
The ride back during the afternoon ended with a visit with Setuko to pick some mushrooms, which we later used in some of our dinner’s dishes.
Speaking about the dinner, we had great okonomiyaki and some sake on top, a nice end for a quiet day that’s allowed us to know better the area and take a brief.

今日は、フリーデイ。言うまでもなく､待ちに待っていた！
宿舎から９キロ離れているくろくまの滝に、自転車で向かう。今日は格別に、空が青く晴れており、道中、目を見張る景色を楽しんだ。自転車を降りて、少し歩くと、滝に到着した。近くの川辺で昼食をとることにした。もちろんその後の昼寝も忘れずに。午後、自転車をこいで学校へ戻り、節子さんの山できのこ採りをした。採ったきのこは、夕食で使わせてもらう。
夕食はというと、おいしいお好み焼きと、お酒だ。素敵な一日を過ごし、このあたりのことをより知ることが出来た。
Tuesday 31
Today’s been the first day of real work.
We woke up earlier than usual to get to the place where we were to work by bicycle, at around 15 minutes from our residence.
At our arrival, some people from the area plus Mr. Funamizu were already at work, which consisted on pulling some baby trees that had been planted on earlier years (from 1 to 4 years old), cut their roots and replant them in a way that will enable them to survive during the hard and long winter of this area.
We’ve done the work for the whole morning and afternoon, the 8 of us plus up to 6 other people, which allowed us to do the work smoothly and cover a quite wide area.
All of the tasks that we did implied being bent, so our backs ached afterwards, a brief sample of the hard working conditions that people in rural areas have to face.
At around 4 we finished the work and went back home for the dinner and the usual time of relax. Today is Halloween night, so who knows if we’ll be doing something related to it after the dinner (?). More news on this tomorrow!

今日から、作業本番突入。
いつもより早く起き、宿舎から自転車で約15分かけて作業場へと向かう。
私たちが着くと、地元の方々はすでに作業に就いていた。１から４年目までの苗木を引っこ抜き、根を切り、もう一度植える。こうすることで、苗木がこのあたりの厳しく、長い冬を生き抜くことが出来るのだ。
丸一日かけて、私たちキャンパー８人と６人の地元の方々で行った作業は順調に進み、かなり広い部分の作業が完了した。
すべての作業は腰を曲げて行う必要があり、作業の後背中が痛くなった。背中の痛みとともに、この地域の人々が向き合っている仕事がいかにたいへんなものであるかを感じた。
４時ごろに作業を終えて、我が家へ戻り、いつものようにくつろぐ。今日はハローウィンの夜、夕食後にどんなことをしたかはもうお分かりでしょう。ご報告は、明日！
Wednesday 1
As the night had been quite cold and rainy, we weren’t able to know until the last moment before leaving our
accomodation if we were going to work on the fields or if we were to work indoors doing other tasks.
Despite the rain, it was decided to work continuing with the last day’s work: cutting and re-planting the baby beech trees.
We worked for around two hours in the morning having some time to rest in between, and we ate at 12 as usual. It’s been a freezing day, so we’ve had to eat covered up with a blanket so as not to catch a cold. On the good side, we had local people’s knowledge that kept us away constantly from being cold. Nice people!
The afternoon work went as usual, rather smooth and quick, finishing with all the 4 year old trees and having them already ranged inside the greenhouse.
We seem to be accumulating exhaustion from the previous day, as we ended up quite tired, and certainly more than the day before.

昨夜はとても寒く、雨が降ったため、宿舎を出る直前まで、苗床で作業をするのか室内で他の作業をするのかが判らなかった。
結局、苗木の根を切り、植えなおすという、昨日の作業の続きを行うことになった。
午前は休憩をはさみながら２時間ほど作業をして、普段通り12時ごろ昼食を食べる。今日は凍りそうなほど寒く、風邪をひかないように毛布に包まりながら食べた。地元の方々は、私たちが寒くないようにと絶えず知恵をくださる。とっても素敵な人たちだ！
午後は、普段通り作業は順調に進み、ほぼすべての４年木を根切れし、ビニールハウスの中に並べ終えた。
私たちは前日からの疲労が重なったようで、昨日よりもずっと体が重かった。
